A BARN-RAISING AT FAIRBAIRN HOUSE?

Yes, That's right.  With wood saved from barns from yesteryear we will build a barn beside the House this summer.  It will complement the homestead, become a new display space, and a welcoming community venue...BUT to raise this barn we need volunteers to help us.

Here is our five-step plan:

  • Window workshop:  May 27 & 28, 2017;

two day workshop to build the barn's traditional wooden windows. REGISTER here

  • Prepare the big timbers:  June days;

Help select and prepare the 8'x8'timbers, prepare the joints and braces, and number them for assembly.

  • Lay the foundation:  end of June;

Work with the municipal crew to prepare and install a gravel bed, build forms, and pour concrete.

  • Barn-raising days: July;

Raise the structure, brace the tiber frame, roof with pole rafters and metal sheets, clad with pine boards, install doors and windows.

  • Fit and Finish:  Fall and Winter;

Install electricity, build interior stairs, prepare ground level displays, build work benches, build storage shelving in hayloft.
